I started my spiritual journey when I was quite young. I was unaware at the time that it was a spiritual journey that I was on. My mother was a widow with five children, because of that she had to work many hours to keep the family going. She never took us to church, probably because she worked most Sundays as a pool attendant at the local swimming baths. The local church, the Church of the Ascension was literally at the top of the street we lived on, so I decided to take myself off to church, possibly it was better than being at home being bossed around by both my two older siblings and two younger. I enjoyed the camaraderie I experienced. I had been born with some kind of blockage that meant I could not hear, it was some time before my parents recognized that there was a problem. I still was not walking at 2½ years old, and I did not express emotions very much because of it. The doctor eventually discovered this by simply clapping his hands behind my back. After the problem was rectified I had to have speech therapy for many years. As a result of that, for quite some time my speech was considered very proper for a young child, although I did have a little speech impediment. Anyway I took myself off to church every Sunday and as a result of my being able to speak so well, I was given the privilege of standing on a crate to reach the lectern and read out a passage from the bible to the entire congregation, believe me when I say that some of those words from the Bible are very long and very hard to pronounce when you are only eight years old, but somehow I managed very well, this was the beginning phase of my spiritual journey in this lifetime.
